# Automated Test Suites for Ruby on Rails

Every change to a Rails application carries a question: did we break
something? Without automated tests, the only way to answer it is to click
through the application by hand - slowly, incompletely, and less often the
busier the team gets. A reliable test suite answers that question in minutes,
on every single change.

We build test suites for new applications, and we add them to existing ones
that have few or none.

## Why Continuous Integration matters

A test suite only protects you if it actually runs. On a developer machine,
tests get skipped when time is short. In
[Continuous Integration](https://qameta.com/continuous-integration/), they run on every push and
every pull request, without exceptions.

* Every change is checked against the whole application, not just the part
  someone remembered to test
* Problems show up minutes after they are introduced, while the change is
still fresh in the developer's mind
* A green build is a shared, objective signal the team can trust before
  merging and deploying
* It is the foundation for [Continuous Delivery](https://qameta.com/continuous-delivery/) -
shipping automatically is only safe when testing is automatic too

## Security updates become routine

When a security advisory for Rails or a gem is published, the fix is often a
one-line version bump. The hard part is knowing that the bump didn't break
anything. Without tests, teams hesitate - and the vulnerable version stays in
production for weeks.

With a solid test suite, a security update is a pull request like any other:

* Update the dependency
* Let CI run the full suite
* Merge and deploy when it is green

Tools like Dependabot or Renovate can open these pull requests automatically.
With good tests behind them, most can be merged the same day. This is what
makes ongoing [security maintenance](https://qameta.com/ruby-on-rails-security-maintenance/)
affordable.

## Major upgrades become plannable

A jump to the next major Rails or Ruby version touches every part of an
application. Without tests, it is a gamble that is usually postponed until it
can't be postponed any longer. With tests, it becomes a sequence of small,
verifiable steps:

* Run the suite against the new version and get a concrete list of what
  breaks
* Fix failures one by one, with CI confirming each fix
* Turn on deprecation warnings and clear them before the next step
* Ship with confidence, because the behaviour your users rely on is covered

This is exactly how we approach
[Ruby on Rails upgrades](https://qameta.com/ruby-on-rails-upgrades/) and migrations like
[Resque to Solid Queue](https://qameta.com/resque-to-solid-queue-migration/).

## Faster pace, not slower

Writing tests takes time - but much less than the time it saves. Teams without
tests slow down as the application grows, because every change needs more
manual checking and every release carries more risk. Teams with good tests
keep their pace:

* Refactoring is safe, so the code stays clean instead of piling up workarounds
* New developers can change unfamiliar code without fear of breaking it
* Fewer bugs reach production, so less time goes into firefighting
* Releases become small and frequent instead of big and stressful

## What we build

* **Model and unit tests** for business logic, validations and edge cases
* **Request and integration tests** for controllers, APIs and background jobs
* **System tests** that drive a real browser through the most important user
  journeys
* **Regression tests** for every bug we fix, so it never comes back
* **A fast and reliable suite** - parallel test runs, no unnecessary setup, and
  no tolerance for [flaky tests](https://qameta.com/posts/fix-flaky-rails-system-tests-caused-by-slow-scrolling-or-animations/)
* **CI integration** with clear results on every pull request

For an existing application without tests, we start where the risk is
highest: the critical business flows and the code that changes most often.
Coverage then grows with every change we make, following our approach to
[Test Driven Development](https://qameta.com/test-driven-development/).

## Summary

An automated test suite running in CI is what turns maintenance from a risk
into a routine. Security updates get merged the same day, major upgrades get
planned instead of feared, and your team keeps shipping at full speed as the
application grows.
